Morningside Road, Edinburgh
2009
AMA Studio developed proposals for a new residential building on Mornigside Road. The building consists of 6 storeys and includes 11 apartments situated over street level retail.
Morningside Road is a busy north south artery into Edinburgh’s city centre from Biggar. 356-364 Morningside Road is a gap in the Conservation Area streetscape created by the collapse a tenement.
The design concept is to detail a high quality building that quietly complements and echoes the character of the surrounding context by reinterpreting the rhythm and articulation of the tenements to complete the block without resorting to pastiche. The flat plans are arranged to present the public rooms to the street with the bedrooms facing the garden court.
By introducing a split level section the principal rooms on the lower floors receive a traditional floor to ceiling proportion with standard height at the rear for bedrooms. This allows the front elevation flexibility to relate well to the adjacent period streetscape and proportions.
