Edmonstone Landscape Masterplan, Edinburgh

2003-

This project was commissioned by Edmonstone Developments Ltd and was prepared by AMA in consultation with Ian White Associates.

The purpose of the masterplan was to offer a way to preserve the unique characteristics of the open land of the Green Belt, whilst creating a framework for development that contained meaningful connections, edges and linkages. The heart of the masterplan proposals was the creation of a well defined and managed green amenity space that would be an asset to the new Royal Infirmary, the Biomedical park and research facilities, as well as the local communities.

Using the Meadows as a precedent we aimed to create a similar level of diversity of buildings facing onto its edges, a range of uses within its space and the ability to contain and adapt many ways of travelling through it (car, bus foot bicycle). We believe it will demonstrate the Greenbelt's natural evolution from open agricultural fields into managed, secured recreational parks and spaces to be used and enjoyed by the people who work and live there.
