Royal Theatre, Copenhagen
2002 - International Competition
Our competition proposals on Copenhagen's waterfront at Kvaesthusgraven for the new Royal Theatre include a 1500 seat auditorium, studio theatre and rehearsal rooms, along with public restaurants, shops and cafe and backstage accommodation.
The form of the building is a dynamic and fluid reinterpretation of the seafaring structures which historically transformed the waterscape. Care has been taken to avoid creating a "front” and “back” to the building. A new canal for mooring small boats and crafts is proposed with wide public walkways connecting Amalienborg from Nyhaven to create a new intimacy between water and people.
