“A Gathering Space”, Venice
Open Competition Submission • 2009
AMA's proposals for the Scottish presence at the 2009 Venice Biennale consider both the idea of 'a gathering place' as a beginning; and the theme of ’threshold’ both as a literal construct and as concept reflecting our culture.
Scotland has always struggled with its own demons, past and future: a threshold can be both a journey’s end and its beginning - a limit or a challenge. Perhaps even more so today we are at a threshold of a new journey.
Our proposals create a generously proportioned non-formal space, which through the transformation of lowering screens can be both a closed room for an intimate audience, or an open route, a foyer which includes everyone who passes by.
